Tips for buying the right used and new vans for your business

by Edith J. Landers

Before choosing either new or used vans on behalf of your business, you will need to make a few important decisions about what kind of vans you will need. The key here is to find new or used vans which best suit the needs of the business, although it's also important to keep cost in mind.

First of all, think about the size of the new or used vans your company needs. Buying vans that are larger than you need, on the off-chance you need extra capacity once or twice a year, is a false economy. These larger vans will use much more fuel, thereby costing the company extra money.

What you should do is to buy new or used vans that are the right size for the day-to-day requirements of your business. Then, if you ever need more capacity, it's simply a case of hiring larger vans on a short-term basis.

Although it's important to choose the right sized vans, it is also important that you don't overload the vans you buy. To avoid putting too much strain on the engines, gearboxes and brakes of your vehicles, make sure you get vans which have sufficient carrying capacity. Fail to do this and overload your vans, and you could be facing huge servicing costs as well as vans that don't last as long as they should.

Next up on your list of ideal van criteria is engine size. In order to choose correctly from all that vans for sale at the moment, you should think about the length and type of journeys your vans will need to make most often. For motorway journeys, where vehicles need to travel for long periods of time at high speeds, the most fuel-efficient choice would be used or new vans with larger engines.

However, if the most common journeys are on smaller, city roads, the best and most cost-efficient options are used vans with smaller engines. You may also want to consider other ways of saving money on fuel, such as choosing vans with 'stop-start' features.
