The Biggest Causes of Deaths on our Roads

by Arthur Wright

The statistics paint a fairly clear picture on just how dangerous driving is. Over a million people die every year on the roads, and twenty five million have been killed over the last century. This is a figure that's too big to take in. You're looking at the population of a small country, and the figures also show that road deaths or on the increases, with no sign on abating over the next decade. So what are the leading causes of deaths of the roads, and why can't greater car safety seem to stem the tide of this terrible carnage.

The main factor is one of the most depressing. Driver distraction is the key cause of car fatalities, and although this incorporates a wide range of distractions the most common one is people taking their eyes of the road to nosy at another accident. This is a nightmare that emergency services deal with every day. When you have one bad collision you're liked to have a number of other ones from people morbidly trying to get a better view of the scene as they pass. Too many people do from being spectators to victims themselves. Attention should always be paid to the road.

Anther common cause is drivers taking to the roads when they're fatigued. Driving is a complex task, even though it's now part of routine for most people. Some of the most serious crashes in recent years have been caused by people falling asleep at the wheel, or by carelessness induced by lack of rest. This is another thing that comes down to driver responsibility. You have to assess for yourself whether you are a danger to others, and it's important that you do so honestly.

Drink driving is an issue, especially with an increasing number of young drivers. If you're inebriated you shouldn't be behind the wheel. Reaction times are slower and judgement is impaired, which are both fancy ways of saying that drinking makes you too stupid to be capable of driving. Unfortunately it also makes people too stupid to make that decision for themselves, so remember to look out for friends that are trying to drink drive and stop them before they harm themselves or others.

Those are the top three causes of deaths on the road, but there are many other ways in which a lack of responsibility on the part of the driver can lead to disaster
