Lit Signs and Senior Drivers

by Jessi McCaffery

In the next twenty years, it's estimated that about 25% of the drivers on the road will be older citizens 65 years old and older. The good news is, that means the roads will be full of very experienced drivers. The bad news is, it poses some definite hazards.

Most more experienced drivers originally got their licenses when the streets were a lot less complex and less well-traveled. Traffic increases every year, roads have lanes added, new laws go into effect and the highway system gets more complicated to traverse. For some seniors whose reflexes aren't quite as quick as they used to be, these things can make the roads a touch more challenging.

Our eyesight tends to dim as we get older, also , which can make seeing street signs good enough a difficulty. Light-up driver feedback signs, however , use bright LED lights that will make them easier for everybody to read, particularly seniors. One of the street signs that can help mature drivers is the light-up green arrow for left turns. Because there is no question of right-of-way when turning is on a green arrow, intersections can be easier to navigate.

Lighted speed display signs that may be programmed to display the speed limit or reflect drivers' speeds back at them can help in the same way, by drawing the eye and making senior drivers conscious of their speed. Many people, especially those who drive the same roads daily, stop seeing signs after a while. We recognise a speed limit sign, naturally, but are even less sure to really look at it as we're a sign that tells us what speed we're traveling at.

Someone who's driven the same roads for 50 years may overlook even a newly placedsign, but one that's brightly lit is very much more likely to be seen. If the display changes, showing their speed and even flashing if they go over the limit, they are even less likely to miss it. Lighted signs are great for seniors and others with visual problems. to help them keep themselves and others safe.
