Do You Need Immediate SR22 California Car Insurance?

by Irene Dixon

An SR-22 is an insurance document that proves you have the minimum legal requirement for liability insurance. You may need Immediate SR22 California if you are having your driving privileges reinstated after an uninsured accident or following a conviction for a serious traffic-related offense such as driving while under the influence of alcohol. You may have had your license suspended for a collection of unpaid traffic tickets or even for failure to pay child support.

Special conditions are attached to an SR22 insurance policy that do not apply under normal circumstances. One such condition is that the insurance company must provide certification to the driver's state Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). They must also inform the DMV if the policy is cancelled or terminated or if the driver forgets to make a premium payment.

In order to have your drivers license reinstated, you need to provide proof of insurance cover even if you do not own a car. Non-owner SR-22 insurance is available for people who do not own a motor vehicle, but who require insurance in order to have their driving privileges reinstated.

You will need to keep SR-22 insurance for three years following the date your driving license is reinstated, even if you do not own a car or other type of motor vehicle. During this three-year period, your insurance company is obligated to inform the DMV if you are late making a payment, if you change to another insurance provider, or any other reason why the policy may have lapsed.

If your insurance has a reason to contact your state's DMV, for whatever reason, your license will be revoked for non-compliance with the SR-22 regulations. Unfortunately, once you get the insurance policy and your license reinstated, the three-year time period will start right back at the beginning. You will lose the time, and the insurance premiums, that you have paid so far.

Some states, like California, have penalty fees, which can be as high as USD 250. Reinstatement of driving privileges may also carry a fee. Only six states in the country do not have SR-22 regulations.

Most insurance companies provide SR-22 policies, although not all of them do. They are very expensive and if you own more than one car or other type of motor vehicle, each vehicle will need a separate SR-22 policy. Moreover, if your car is financed, you will need to add collision and comprehensive cover at exceedingly high rates, again, for a full three-year term.
